Y: Marshals introduces ‘changed’ Kayce as fans still in the dark on major character exit

Yellowstone’s upcoming spin-off, Y: Marshals, is set to thrust Kayce Dutton (portrayed by Luke Grimes) into uncharted territory following a devastating bereavement.
The fresh series, launching on CBS and Paramount+ next year, will track the rancher and ex-Navy SEAL in the aftermath of his father John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) demise during the original Western drama’
Joining forces with an elite U.S. Marshals unit, Kayce faces the challenge of juggling fatherhood to his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) whilst standing as Montana’s final bulwark against escalating violence.
Whilst the upcoming show is anticipated to welcome back numerous recognisable characters from the Yellowstone universe, with Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty confirmed as returning regulars, one significant absence from the casting announcements has raised eyebrows.
Questions remain over whether Kelsey Asbille will return as Kayce’s spouse Monica, despite the couple remaining united when the previous season concluded, reports the Express.
Earlier speculation hinted that her non-appearance would be addressed, and writer Spencer Hudnut has now offered additional insight into Kayce’s circumstances at the start of Marshals.

“He is a cowboy, but he is also a Navy Seal, so he has this incredible toolkit of skills to put to the test,” he revealed during a chat with Entertainment Weekly. “He’s a guy who excels running into the fire. As we saw all through Yellowstone, he is really the essence of being a protector, so it felt very natural for him to end up in a position like this where he’s putting others first.”
Despite his primary role as a family man, Kayce’s dedication to the Dutton Ranch often required him to join forces with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) to defend their territory from adversaries.
