Shirley Stelfox played the character of Edna Birch for fifteen years in the soap. Her character was sharp sharp-tongued Christian who had a strong moral compass. She also had a softer side. However, Shirley passed away at the age of 74 in 2015. As her final episodes were already filmed, the soap bosses had to construct a final exit for Edna.
Meanwhile, ten years after her death, Kelli Holis, who played the character of Ali Spencer, opened up about how she felt working with her. She recalled her first day on the soap set. Kelli said that she was anxious to meet the amazing Shirley Fox, who played Edna. She added that everybody warned her that she might try to freak her out and scare her. Kelli left the small smoking area, and she was very nervous to meet her, but she introduced herself.

The soap star added that Shirley had a beautiful mane of hair. She jokingly asked if it was her from the horrible, effing family. Then they started bonding with each other. She did try to tease her and freak her out, but she loved Shirley.
Moreover, Kelli opened up about her first scene. She walked into the Woolpack, which was surrounded by many famous characters. Everyone was so welcoming that it felt like she had already been a part of the soap. Her scene was with Tom, who played Carl. In that scene, her character had to punch him. She didn’t do that scene well.
Elsewhere, Kelli played Ali between 2011 and 2015. She was the sister of the established character Rachael Breckle. After the helicopter crash, Ali moved to Liverpool with Rachael. Meanwhile, Edna’s storyline led to her opposing Ashley’s relationship with Bernice. She was heartbroken after a hit-and-run accident that killed her headteacher, Miss Strickland. However, things got worse when Strickland kicked Batley. After losing the dog, she adopted Tootsie.
Later, she was hit by a car driven by Sam Dingle. However, when she found out, she eventually forgave him. She got close to Tom, but due to the betrayal, the friendship ended.
