After 14 Years Of Mercy, Blue Bloods Spinoff Finally Holds Danny Accountable

When it comes to Danny Reagan’s questionable choices, Boston Blue evidently isn’t letting him get away with anything. Donnie Wahlberg is reprising his role as Danny in the Blue Bloods spinoff, which features the character adjusting to his new home in Boston after moving out of New York. In it, Danny will continue his law enforcement career, just in a different city.

Aside from Danny, the main cast of Boston Blue includes another familiar character — his son, Sean Reagan, now played by Mika Amonsen. Other than that (and a few Blue Bloods cameos), the CBS police procedural will introduce new characters. And one of the TV show’s newbies is making sure that Danny doesn’t resort to his old habits on the job.

Lena Calls Out Danny’s Rogue Tendencies In The Boston Blue Trailer

Danny’s New Partner Won’t Let Him Get Away With Anything

CBS released the trailer for Boston Blue a little over a month before its premiere, teasing the dynamic between Danny and his new partner, Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Thankfully, based on the video, Lena will hold Danny accountable for his sketchy decisions in the spinoff. As such, there is seemingly no better partner for Danny than Lena.

In the trailer, Lena tells Danny, “You have a reputation,” referring to his tendency to go off-book when policing. He argues that that is how he gets things done. However, it doesn’t sound like Lena will take that for an answer and move on. No, she’ll call him out on his crap.

Based on everything we have seen so far, Martin-Green’s character can hold her own in Boston Blue. She won’t allow Danny to walk all over her and let him get away with his rogue behavior. This is a far cry from how the original series treated Danny, as Blue Bloods often let Danny’s mistakes slide over the course of its 14-season run.

Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods character was immune to getting in trouble for a few reasons. Firstly, he’s a Reagan. That name holds a lot of weight in New York, granting Danny a privilege not many others have. His father is the Police Commissioner, after all. So, people were more willing to turn a blind eye when it came to Danny in Blue Bloods.

Additionally, Danny has been rather successful in his endeavors. As Danny said in the spinoff’s trailer, he gets things done, and his effectiveness has resulted in leniency. Wahlberg’s Boston Blue character has also been let off the hook one too many times because Blue Bloods premiered during the height of copaganda shows, which painted police in the perfect light.

Boston Blue premieres on Friday, October 17, at 10 pm ET on CBS.
