How Beth and Rip’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Will Alter the Course of the Taylor Sheridan Universe

Beth and Rip’s “Yellowstone” spinoff is officially moving forward, and it’s heading somewhere unexpected: Texas. The new series has started filming in Ferris, marking a big departure from the franchise’s Montana roots and sparking plenty of speculation among fans.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, with Finn Little returning as Carter, and Annette Bening joining as the show’s antagonist. However, instead of showcasing Montana’s sweeping landscapes, the production has landed in Ferris, a small town located about 20 miles south of Dallas.

Ferris City Manager Brooks Williams celebrated the news, calling it “a proud and fun moment for Ferris.” While it’s unclear if the story itself will be set in Ferris, moving Beth and Rip’s saga to Texas is a bold shift. At the end of “Yellowstone,” the couple and their adopted son were living in Dillon, Montana. The new location suggests Sheridan may lean into Rip’s Texas connections that were hinted at in earlier seasons.

The project is currently filming under the working title “Rio Palo,” although Dani Weinstein of 101 Studios confirmed that the name is only temporary, with “The Dutton Ranch” also being considered.

Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that, unlike Sheridan’s other projects this series may not be designed as a multi-season epic. Instead, it could unfold as a self-contained story—much like “1883”—a significant departure from the interconnected universe of Sheridan.

Still, nothing has been confirmed about the show’s long-term future. Fans may get a tightly focused continuation of Beth and Rip’s ferocious love story, or the project could evolve into another multi-season saga.

Beth and Rip's Yellowstone Spinoff Has a Name and Premiere Date

Alongside Beth and Rip’s spinoff, another “Yellowstone” favorite is set to return. Nearly six months after the conclusion of the flagship series, Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton in a spinoff called “Y: Marshals.”

As Deadline reported in May 2025, the series will follow Kayce as he becomes a U.S. Marshal in Montana. The project expands Sheridan’s growing franchise, which already includes prequels, sequels, and spinoffs like “1883”, “1923”, “1944”, “6666”, “Lawman: Bass Reeves,” and “The Madison”.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, emphasized the scope of the franchise in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: “Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with 5 million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions — and we’re just getting started.”

“Rio Palo” or “The Dutton Ranch” is expected to premiere on Paramount+ in 2026.
