Soap crossover as Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly reunites with former co-star

Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly was overjoyed to be reunited with her old co-star while at this year’s Inside Soap Awards.

Beth has played the role of Ruby Miligan in the ITV soap since 2024. Away from her Emmerdale role, Beth is also known for portraying Kerry Young in popular crime drama The Bill.

PC Young arrived in the show in 2002. Her time at Sun Hill Station ended in tragedy in 2004, when she was shot outside the station.

Amid the police drama, Kerry was also involved in a relationship storyline with Dale Smith, best known of course as Smithy.

Smithy was portrayed by Alex Walkinshaw, who also played Fletch in Holby City and Casualty. Due to the fact Alex is now a cast member of BBC One’s EastEnders, he went along to this year’s Inside Soap Awards ceremony.

As he caught up with friends from the industry, it wasn’t long until Alex bumped into Beth!

Over on Beth’s Instagram, she shared a video of her time at the big event. She took snaps with Diane Buswell from Strictly Come Dancing, her Emmerdale family, and Alex himself.

In the carousel of memories, Beth wrote ‘And Kerry found Smithy!’ alongside the picture of herself and Alex.

Fans of the show absolutely loved seeing the two stars together again.

‘Ahh I loved the bill reunion !! Omg loved that show’ one of Beth’s followers said.

Another person wrote: ‘Loved seeing Kerry and Smithy. I still watch The Bill.’

Alex Walkinshaw’s final appearance as Fletch in Holby City aired in the show’s last ever episode.

The instalment saw Fletch and other members of Holby City Hospital say goodbye to Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel), who died following a brain tumour diagnosis.

Alex returned to the world of soap in March of this year, playing the partner of Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig).

Ross Marshall is the father of Joel (Max Murray), a teenager who has left plenty of Walford residents horrified by his misogynistic beliefs.

Ross and Joel moved overseas as they couldn’t return to their home in Australia. We later learnt that this was because Joel had upskirted a pupil in his class, and Ross had paid her family $50,000 in exchange for their silence.

He’s since enacted havoc on the residents of Albert Square, impregnating Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) and introducing new mate Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to dangerous adult content online.

While Ross has witnessed his son’s vile behaviour, he often finds himself struggling to understand that influencers online have warped Joel’s way of thinking.

In August, it was confirmed the BBC One soap would air a documentary that looks at Joel’s storyline.

The special will explore the worrying growth of misogynistic attitudes amongst young men, and how it is spreading through online communities.

Featuring contributions from members of the EastEnders cast, it comes as themes from the critically acclaimed Netflix drama Adolescence have begun to be explored.

Over in Emmerdale, life continues to be dramatic for Beth’s character Ruby Miligan.

Earlier this year, she was part of a harrowing storyline that saw Ruby’s loved ones discover she was sexually abused by her father when she was a child.

As a result of this abuse, Ruby gave birth to her daughter Steph Miligan (Georgia Jay).

Anthony Fox was murdered by Ruby, with John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) being the one to dispose of his body.

John used this to his advantage last week, as he became determined to go on the run from the police.

He told Caleb Miligan (William Ash) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) that if they didn’t let him go, he’d ensure the police receive an email detailing what really happened to Anthony.

Fearing for Ruby’s future, Caleb knocked Cain out and helped John with his plan.
