SHOCK!!! Kayce Dutton joins the U.S. Marshals — but his past won’t stay buried. The Yellowstone hero faces haunting secrets in Y: Marshals!

That chilling confession from Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) sets the tone for Y: Marshals, the highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff that promises a darker, more psychological journey for the fan-favorite cowboy.

Kayce’s New Path: From Rancher to U.S. Marshal

In the newly released teaser (via Us Weekly), Kayce has left behind the sprawling Dutton ranch for the dangerous frontier of law enforcement. Trading horses for handcuffs, he joins an elite U.S. Marshals task force charged with enforcing “range justice” across Montana.

“I’m changing paths,” Kayce says in the clip. “Trying to find a new beginning.”

According to CBS, the series will explore Kayce’s attempt to reconcile his violent past with his new role as protector. The official logline describes Y: Marshals as following Kayce as he “combines his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring justice to Montana, while balancing family, duty, and the psychological cost of being the last line of defense in a lawless land.”Rewatching Yellowstone Made Me Realize How Much I Missed Rip Vs. Luke Grimes on Returning to Kayce Dutton

Grimes admitted he thought his time as Kayce was over when Yellowstone wrapped in 2024.

“On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce,” he told People. “It was seven years of playing a person I thought I’d never see again… It was really emotional — like losing a family.”

But when the Y: Marshals concept was pitched, Grimes was hooked.

“If it was just ‘he’s happy now,’ that’s not very cool,” he said. “The idea they gave me was very good, very interesting — and it really roped me in. I think it’ll do the same for the audience.”Y: Marshals Proves Kayce Dutton Was Always Yellowstone's Secret Weapon (& Taylor Sheridan Knew It All Along)

Familiar Faces, New Conflicts

Grimes teased that while Y: Marshals will introduce an entirely new world, viewers can expect cameos from Yellowstone veterans — though he stopped short of confirming who.

“There are going to be some familiar faces and a lot of new ones too,” he shared. “To go back into it in a new set of circumstances is going to be a real transition.”

When Does Y: Marshals Premiere?

CBS has confirmed that Y: Marshals will debut in spring 2026 as a Sunday night midseason replacement at 9 p.m. ET.

The show marks the first Yellowstone spinoff to move to a broadcast network, promising a mix of Western grit, emotional storytelling, and high-stakes action — all centered on Kayce Dutton’s struggle to escape the ghosts of his past.
